The Leduc MNP Riggers still can’t shake their losing streak, losing their home game 4-3 against the Strathcona Bruins on Friday, Dec. 11 and an away game 5-3 against the Spruce Grove Regals on Dec. 13. On Sunday, the Regals scored the two goals in the first period in a matter of seconds.
During the second period the Riggers got goals from Dustin Dehaan, assisted by Patrick Kwasnecha and a power play goal from Keith Bundy, assisted by Dehaan and David Alackson.
The Regals also got their third goal of the game, ending the second 3-2. The Riggers’ Dehaan got his second goal of the game with six minutes left in the third period with help from Dan Tatro and Brad Schumacher, tying the game at three. With four minutes remaining the Regals got two goals past Rigger goalie Rob Oscroft, ending the game with the Riggers falling 5-3 to Spruce Grove. “We didn’t have a bad start but our energy after the first five minutes kind of went down and it picked up during the last five minutes of the game,” said Riggers coach Dean Gauvreau. “We had a 10 minute span when we were flat and that was where it seemed to hurt us.” On Friday, the Bruins got on board first, scoring two goals in the first two minutes, 13 seconds apart. The Riggers’ Tyler Roberge scored a goal on the power play minutes later, with a little help from Parker Thomas and Nick Greuter. The Bruins took over the next seven minutes, scoring two more goals, one on a power play. Before the end of the period, the Riggers slashed the Bruins’ lead in half with a power play goal from Brad Schumacher, assisted by Thomas and Greuter. “It was the same old problem, we came out flat for the first 10 minutes and they scored four goals in eight minutes,” Gauvreau said. “We dug ourselves a hole there.” After a quiet second period, the Riggers got back on the board during the third, with a goal from Tyler Posch, assisted by Kyle Michaelsky and David Alackson. With 20 minutes in penalties including a misconduct in the first, 11 minutes of penalties in the second plus a game misconduct and two minutes in the third, the coach said the Riggers have to learn to control their temper. “You can afford to have certain guys have penalties but when the top players are missing from the game it makes it harder to get out of the hole you’re in, especially when you are down four goals.” He said once the Riggers learn to put together a complete 60-minute game they are going to be fine. “The effort’s there but you can’t come back when you are four goals down to try and win a hockey game.” The Riggers’ next home game is Sunday, Jan. 3 at the Sobeys arena at the LRC.
