On Friday, October 9 the MNP Riggers hosted the Spruce Grove Regals at the Leduc Recreation Centre. The visiting Regals get the early jump recording four shots in the first two and a half minutes while the home team failed to produce a single shot. The MNP Riggers first shot was right on target only to have the visiting netminder come up with a glove save. When both teams find themselves in the sin bin, the Regals still manage to control the play. Despite being outplayed in the first eight minutes of the game, the Riggers get on the scoreboard first as Tyler Roberge finds the back of the net with Kevin Glegloff getting the helper. The Riggers continue to fight back as Matt Klute, Spruce Grove's netminder, deflects a bullet from the Riggers Rob Cartwright from the blue line. The visiting Regals respond to the Riggers with a sweet goal just over the halfway point in the first period.
The Riggers work hard to regain the lead only to be shut down once again by the Regals' goaltender. MNP Riggers veteran D-man, Josh Dugas gets smoked on a check that took him down. After getting checked out by the team's trainer, he gets up and skates unassisted to the bench and would return to the game after catching his breath. The Riggers Kevin Glegloff skates in on a nice move around the Regals defence and scores to regain the lead for the home team late in the first. The Riggers Kyle Michalsky would take a penalty with only 20 seconds remaining in opening frame, but the team would take the 2-1 lead into the intermission.
The Riggers would control much of the second period despite being out-shot three to twelve. Tyler Roberge takes a couple of short handed swings at the net, but is denied by the Regals netminder, but gets an A+ for effort. The Riggers score their third goal of the night on the power play on Dustin Dehan's shot with Kyle Michalsky and Ryan Doyle picking up helpers. The MNP Riggers begin the third period much like the second, shorthanded. Penalties plaque the third period with both teams exchanging time spent in the box. The Riggers Dustin Dehan scores unassisted for his second of the night to notch a 4-1 lead. He fights to get through the Spruce Grove defence and shoots the puck and watches as it trickles over the goal line. Late in the third, Tyler Roberge backhands the puck to Nick Gruter who tries to tap it in only to have the Regals netminder freeze the puck and hold on for the whistle. The MNP Riggers finish with only their second win of the season as they look to move up in the standings. The player of the game for the MNP Riggers was the team's starting goalie, Mason Buchannan. The Riggers next home game is SUNDAY, OCT. 18 with the face-off at 2:30 pm. |
